Using Cognitive Stimulation Therapy (CST) in dementia care centre
Cognitive Stimulation Therapy (CST) is considered one of the best available evidence based approaches to improve cognitive skills for people with dementia. Researches showed that CST helps memory and cognitive skills of people with mild to moderate dementia. In England, National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) and Social Care Institute for Excellence (SCIE) guidance (2006) recommends people with mild to moderate dementia should be given the opportunity to take part in CST programme.
CST involves structured group therapy sessions with different topics like orientation, using money and food etc. Prior to group implementation, leaders need to prepare group materials which may be considered time and manpower consuming. Besides, in current practice, there seems to be lack of systematic approach to record performance of group members for monitoring progress.
Based on the CST principle and clinical experience of Mind Delight centre, a new toolkit with series of games, covering the main cognitive functions of memory, attention, number, visual spatial, recognition and language had been created. Taking advantage of technology, a tablet/mobile app was developed to record group performance and progress of participants in a systematic approach.
