The HKU School of Nursing has launched the Jockey Club Pathway to Healthy Ageing project, which utilizes the Integrated Care for Older People (ICOPE) assessment to promote the six functional capacities advocated by the WHO (Vitality, Locomotion, Cognition, Psychological, Sensory and Social). The project's key features include adopting a critical pathway to personalize care planning, integrating empowerment-based behavioral modifications, optimizing health-oriented peer support, and empowering social workers to conduct ICOPE-based care planning. This project aims to establish a sustainable, healthy ageing care model that aligns with the global strategy and is compatible with Hong Kong's policy and aged care service frameworks.

The Sau Po Centre on Ageing is a leading research centre on gerontology in Greater China and in the Asian Pacific region. The Centre was officially launched in April 1999 under the auspices of the Faculty of Social Sciences of The University of Hong Kong. With an endowment from Mr. Kwok Sau-po, the Centre was renamed the Sau Po Centre on Ageing in 2002. Through research, education and knowledge exchange activities, the Centre is enhancing the quality-of-life of older people in China, overseas Chinese societies and in the Asian Pacific region. In particular, we hope to achieve optimal independency of older adults at the individual and family levels; and to foster an age-friendly environment in both community and organizational levels.

We strive to better understand what causes stroke, how to better prevent and manage it, and are passionate in improving the well-being of stroke patients and their caregivers.

The "SUPPORT+" project, initiated by the Department of Clinical Oncology at the University of Hong Kong, aims to support cancer patients, caregivers, and the general public through the mobile app "SUPPORT+." We have successfully engaged with over 50,000 users across five online platforms, including iOS and Android apps, Facebook, Instagram, and YouTube, resulting in more than 333,000 user interactions. To further promote our app within the local community, "SUPPORT+" has organized public events like talks, booths, and workshops. Collaboration with various organizations, including District Health Centers, social service groups, and NGOs, has expanded our reach and impact.

As we age, our swallowing related muscles may become weaker, increasing our risk to develop swallowing difficulties. Other common causes of swallowing difficulties include stroke, head-and-neck cancer, dementia and Parkinson’s disease. Swallowing exercises have been shown to be effective to improve muscle strength and swallowing functions in elderly. The game-based exercises (‘ Swallowing Gym’) to facilitate elderly to carry out swallowing exercises daily at home, day care centers or nursing homes. The games are easy-to-use, fun and provide real-time feedback on the users’ performance. The games motivate users to practice swallowing exercises frequently, independently and accurately.

INFItech Limited was founded by a university research team specializing in neuroscience, with core technology transferred from the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) Technology Transfer Center. Based on over 20 years of extensive research on Chinese medicine, we hold nearly 10 patents and intellectual property licenses, with numerous research articles published in international journals.

Focus on creating safer, practical, beautiful and long-term homes for seniors

The Jockey Club "Beat the Heat" Project runs from March 2024 to February 2027, with pilot projects in Yau Tsim Mong and Kwun Tong districts to identify and intervene in the vulnerable elderly households affected by hot weather in the districts. The programme will also provide training to the elderly, carers and frontline community workers through the production of heat maps, publicity and educational activities to raise their awareness of the impact of hot weather on personal health so that they can respond to it. The project is sponsored by the Hong Kong Jockey Club Charities Trust and is jointly organised by the CUHK Jockey Club Institute of Ageing, the Christian Family Service Centre and the Hong Kong Red Cross.

The "Jockey Club CADENZA e-Tools for Elder Care" program was initiated in 2018 with funding from The Hong Kong Jockey Club Charities Trust. The Programme, facilitated by the CUHK Jockey Club Institute of Ageing, developed 15 free online elder-care courses for social and healthcare professionals and family caregivers, aiming to equip them with the necessary knowledge and skills to effectively care for older adults with complex chronic health conditions and support aging in place. Additionally, the Programme introduced the "iHealth Screen" mobile application, which provides 11 free self-health screening tests for the elderly. The app automatically generates screening results, educational videos, and community resources, enabling caregivers and professionals to better manage the health conditions of the elderly.

The “Jockey Club Smart Ageing Hub” project (“Project”) has demonstrated the potential of applying gerontechnology for “ageing in place” and “continuum of care” in the past few years. Over the past years, the elderly population in Hong Kong has been increasing. According to the Census and Statistics Department, the percentage of elderly population (aged 65 and above) was 20% in 2021. It is projected that the rise will continue and reach 31% in 2039.
