Response to Public Consultation on End-of-Life Care: Legislative Proposals on Advance Directives and Dying in Place
Dying with dignity is just as important as living with dignity. Whether we are planning in advance or approaching the end, it is our right to ensure the quality of our lives and the way we die. We should also be able to express our wishes as to where and how we want to die.
Although death is considered taboo in Chinese culture, we believe that advocating for life-and-death education and raising public awareness is an integral part of our mission to develop a smart ageing culture. Planning ahead can help us receive the care we want and provide the right support as our family, partners and friends make difficult decisions later on.
In 2019, the Food and Health Bureau launched a public paper on the “end-of-life care legislative proposals on advance directives and dying in place”. We also held an interactive consultation session with our members across various sectors and professions and submitted a response paper on the government’s proposal. This legislature is just the beginning as we help pave a human-centric approach for our future generations to receive better end-of-life care.
