Thought- Provoking Summit
The Summit highlights leading transformational global trends on the future of economic, social, technological, well-being, and cross generation cohesion developments. These will form the framework for us to develop smart ageing cities in Asia. Such framework will guide the development of government policies and investment from the private sectors to enhance the readiness of societies to meet the challenges of population ageing. Over 80 renowned international and local speakers from 10 countries were gathered at the 3-day summit, including Professor Neena Chapell, Emeritus Professor, University of Victoria; Mr David Lane, Group Director Seniors Living/ Partner, Thomson Adsett. The speakers cover topics in the area of finance, technology, housing, active ageing etc. Local celebrities such as Jasper Tsang, Helena Law and Kenneth Tsang etc will meet and share with the audience also.
The aging problem is getting worse and worse. Which the expenditure on social welfare is continue to rise, the government must adopt an effective mechanism to both improve the service for the elderly, and allow the government to have better control over the financial affairs. Social welfare agencies also face the following challenges: How can we make the best use of money when the budget is reducing? How to determine the effectiveness of a project without spending money? How can we use creative ideas to solve social problems? Social finance in the UK introduced "Reconnections" social security bonds at the summit to tackle the serious loneliness faced by the elderly.
Another summit section, "Ageing in Place: Innovative Homecare", introduces the "case nurse" model. Senior nurses are responsible for assessing and monitoring cases. Personal care programs are formulated based on the health status and needs of the elderly to follow up the rehabilitation. With this model, more elders and carers are given full support to extend the time, health and quality of elderly home-based care, and in preventing too early institutionalization.
