Professor Sally Chan, the third President of Tung Wah College (TWC) since 2021, is a leading scholar in nursing education and research. She is also the co-director of the new TWC Translational Research Centre for Digital Mental Health. Her areas of expertise include mental health care and psychosocial interventions, perinatal mental health, and health professional education. Her translational research, often involving interdisciplinary and international collaboration, has been supported by over 120 funded studies and more than 400 publications in international healthcare journals and presentations. The results of her research have had a profound impact on healthcare practice and education in the Region.

Professor Chan has rich leadership and management experience in higher education institutions. Before she returned to Hong Kong as President of Tung Wah College (TWC), she served as the Pro Vice-Chancellor (PVC) of the University of Newcastle (UON) Singapore Campus (UON Singapore); she successfully led the University to achieve prudent growth in student population and financial capacity despite COVID-19 pandemic. Before that, she was the Dean of the School of Nursing and Midwifery of UON in Australia from 2014 to 2019. She led the School to rank worldwide in the top 47 in Nursing (QS World University Rankings by Subject 2019). The school’s research was ranked well above the world standard, and it obtained the highest score of 5 in Excellence in Research for Australia for consecutive terms in 2015 and 2018. In the past three years, she devoted her utmost effort to advancing TWC to become a leading private university. Under her leadership, new programmes were developed. TWC now has 19 programmes that are accredited by the Hong Kong Council for Academic and Vocational Qualifications. TWC’s research achievements and academic team have tremendously increased the visibility and reputation of TWC.

Professor Chan has been honored for her significant and sustained contribution to nursing, improving the profession and the people it serves. She is on the list of the World's top 2% most-cited scientists released by Stanford University since 2020. Her numerous accolades, including induction into the American Academy of Nursing Fellows, and the ‘International Nurse Researcher Hall of Fame’ awarded by the Sigma Theta Tau International Honours Society of Nursing in 2013. In 2017, she received the Outstanding Alumni Award from the Hong Kong Polytechnic University School of Nursing for her significant achievement and contribution to nursing development and the Hong Kong community. In 2018, she received the Research Supervision Excellence Award from the School of Nursing and Midwifery, University of Newcastle; and the Outstanding Achievement Award from the Hong Kong College of Mental Health Nursing. In 2022, she received the Honorary Fellowship awarded by the Hong Kong Academy of Nursing, as well as Fellow Ad Eundem by the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland (RCSI) Faculty of Nursing and Midwifery in recognition of her achievements in nursing and midwifery, healthcare, education, and research - the first scholar in Hong Kong obtained this accolade. In June 2024, she received the Hong Kong Australian Consul-General’s Outstanding Alumni Award from the Australian Chamber of Commerce in Hong Kong in recognition of her contributions to the Hong Kong community.

Professor Alex Chan is currently the Dean and Professor of the School of Arts and Humanities at Tung Wah College. He joined Tung Wah College in July 2022. Alex also serves as the co-Director of the newly established Translational Research Center of Digital Mental Health (TRC-DMH) at Tung Wah College. Alex has obtained 21 external grants (with a total funded amount of HKD 31.7 million) as Principal Investigator (PI), Co-Principal Investigator (Co-PI), or Project Leader as well as 6 external grants as Co-Investigator (Co-I) or Team Members since 2014.

Prof. Alex Chan has been devoting himself to advocate rigorous research and evidence-based practice in positive psychology. He has been actively engaging in school-based and community-based projects and workshops to promote positive education and strength-based approaches to support mental health and well-being of teachers, parents, children, youth, elderly people, and the wider community. His research interests also include cyberpsychology and positive technologies by applying positive psychology theories and scientific approaches to develop interventions to alleviate online risky behaviors as well as using emerging technologies to cultivate strengths, build resilience, and support human flourishing. Alex has been collaborating with a number of renowned scholars in the fields of positive psychology, developmental psychology, and cyberpsychology, and has published their research in high-ranked academic journals.

Dr Lisa Lam leads academic service-learning initiatives and oversees the development
of TriAngle, HKBU’s first co-working space that promotes social good and innovation.
Dr Lam has extensive experience in teaching, programme development, quality
assurance and education management. She strongly believes in the transformative
power of education, and champions learning experiences that are relevant, engaging
and inclusive. Dr Lam serves as a Court member at HKBU and holds the role of
University Coordinator for the United Nations SDSN. She regularly serves as a judge
on local, regional and international award panels. Dr Lam holds a PhD in Cultural
Studies from the Chinese University of Hong Kong and is a Senior Fellow of the Higher
Education Academy, UK.

Bertram E. Shi is a Professor of Electronic and Computer Engineering at The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST), where he has been a faculty member since 1994 and has served previously as the Acting Dean of the School of Engineering and as the Head of the Department of Electronic and Computer Engineering. He currently directs the HKUST Center for Aging Science and is Associate Director of the HKUST-HKSI Joint Institute on Sports Science and Technology. He has held visiting positions in the EECS Department at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and in the Department of Bioengineering at the University of Pennsylvania. His research interests are in neuromorphic engineering, artificial intelligence, bio-inspired signal processing and robotics, computational neuroscience, developmental robotics and machine learning. Prof. Shi was named Fellow of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) “for contributions to the analysis, implementation and application of cellular neural networks”. He was twice appointed as a Distinguished Lecturer for the IEEE Circuits and Systems Society. He has served as on the editorial boards of several IEEE Transactions and chaired Technical Committees and Conferences in his research area.

Dr. Estella Ma is an Associate Professor at the Faculty of Education and Director of the Voice Research Laboratory at the University of Hong Kong. Her research focuses on the prevention and treatment of voice disorders. Dr. Ma is devoted to translating her research into practice, with the ultimate goal to improve the public’s awareness and practices towards healthy voice care.

Dr MAK Wai-kei is the Head of the Department of Health and Life Sciences at the Hong Kong Institute of Vocational Education. His professional areas of expertise include community pharmacy practice, dispensing practice, drug education and counselling, medication management of residential care homes for the elderly. He has substantial experience in the field of tertiary-level healthcare education.

LIU Tai Wa is an Associate Professor in the School of Nursing and Health Studies at the Hong Kong Metropolitan University where has been a school member since 2020. Tai Wa completed his Master of Nursing at The Chinese University of Hong Kong and Ph.D. at The Hong Kong Polytechnic University and his. His research interests lie in the area of cognitive-based interventions and stroke rehabilitation. He has collaborated actively with researchers in several other disciplines of health sciences, particularly the combined use of physical exercise and cognitive behaviour therapy on stroke recovery

Carol Ma is a leading expert in Service-Learning (S-L) and Ageing in Asia, serving as Head of Gerontology Programmes at the Singapore University of Social Sciences. She pioneered the service-learning curriculum in Hong Kong universities and successfully integrated it with the university’s curriculum, making it a valuable academic experience in higher education in Hong Kong and the region. In Singapore, Carol also spearheads curriculum development, community engagement, and applied research in gerontology, advocating for transdisciplinary education to address ageing issues. She has led impactful projects, including the first geragogy guidelines in Singapore, innovative dementia care programmes, reminiscence facilitation programmes, and older adults' functional capacity under the WHO ICOPE framework, etc. She is an advisor for caregiver and eldercare services with the NCSS, a member of the Tote Board Community Health Fund (TBCHF) Evaluation Panel, an advisor for the International Longevity Centre Singapore. Internationally, she is an advisor of Inclusive learning for the UNESCO Institute for Lifelong Learning and an academic board member for the Uniservitate ( Global network of Catholic Higher Education Institutions to promote service-learning).

Sally Ka-wing LO is a Research Assistant Professor at Felizberta Lo Padilla Tong School of Social Sciences, Saint Francis University, Hong Kong, and an Honorary Research Associate at the Faculty of Social Science, the Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK). Sally holds a PhD from Monash University, Australia, and is a registered social worker in Hong Kong. Her research focuses on carer well-being, care and carer policy, intergenerational family dynamics, the caring relationship, the ethics of care, and gender studies.

Dr. Florence Lei is an Economics assistant professor at the University of Saint Joseph, Macao, where she just received the 10-year service award. Florence’s passion in tertiary education can be traced back to her service in colleges in the US, where she received teaching scholarship and was included in the Dean’s list of excellent student evaluation. Florence’s fields of research are International Economics and Industrial Organization, with a recent focus on topics related to the SDGs, such as valuation of ecosystem services, sustainable trade, and green finance. Florence has maintained a strong bond with her students as the mentor of the Business Club in her university since 2016.

Nicholas OOI (Nick/Nicholas) is currently the Innovation Lead (Link) @ TriAngle at the Centre for Innovative Service-Learning (Website), who promotesicle the concept of Social Innovation and cultivates innovation culture and spirit at Hong Kong Baptist University (HKBU). He is also a mentor for many social enterprises that focus on elder services in Hong Kong, including Gatherly, Rehome, KOeLderly, and more. His areas of interest include social innovation, social enterprise, elderly, eco-system building and social marketing.

Matthew Shum is the founder of a local social enterprise, The Illuminant. The company actively promotes "Self-supporting care" to an aging population by providing forward-looking training programs. The company’s signature project, “VR dementia experience workshop” which is the first of its kind in Hong Kong.
Matthew set up the company after studying elderly care in Japan. His vision is to integrate the best practice experiences and frameworks from other countries into both the elderly care industry and community in Hong Kong. In its six-year history The Illuminant has introduced several new and insightful perspectives into older person care, and it continues to create new and exciting alternatives and possibilities for our social development in the future.
