HKU SUPPORT+

HKU SUPPORT+, an initiative of the Department of Clinical Oncology, LKS Faculty of Medicine at the University of Hong Kong, is pioneering a transformative approach to cancer and palliative care in Hong Kong. Against the backdrop of rising cancer incidence and the pressing need for enhanced community-based care, SUPPORT+ stands out as the city’s first and only mobile platform that seamlessly connects cancer patients and caregivers with professional oncology and palliative care nurses.

Launched in October 2022, SUPPORT+ integrates a mobile app, website, and social media to deliver comprehensive support. Its innovative features include a real-time Symptom Diary for monitoring patient wellbeing, a direct Contact Nurse chat function for rapid professional guidance, and a robust library of educational resources reviewed by HKU medical experts. These tools empower patients and caregivers to self-manage symptoms, navigate complex end-of-life decisions, and access timely, expert advice—anywhere, anytime.

SUPPORT+ has demonstrated significant social impact: by December 2024, over 58,000 users had accessed the app, with active implementation in six major oncology centers and over 2,700 advanced cancer families benefitting from remote support at home. The program has also delivered more than 200 community health talks and booths, reaching thousands and raising vital awareness on cancer prevention and management.

Designed for sustainability, SUPPORT+ is embedded within Hong Kong's public hospital and community health systems, with plans for continued expansion and ongoing collaboration with NGOs and healthcare partners. Its intuitive, continuously updated digital platform ensures that trusted, relevant healthcare information and support remain accessible to all. SUPPORT+ exemplifies innovative, technology-driven healthcare, empowering patients and caregivers and advancing Hong Kong's smart ageing and palliative care strategies.
