Sustainable Strategies for Developing the Golden Age Economy

Intelligent ageing "Medical, food, housing and transportation" products and services

The summit focused on seven major issues related to smart ageing and provided a comprehensive economic strategy for the golden age

According to the population projections of the Census and Statistics Department, the proportion of elderly people aged 65 and above in the overall population will gradually increase from 20.8% in mid-2022 to 25.3% in 2028. The continued increase in the number of elderly will raise the demand for various elderly care and medical services. However, ageing also brings many opportunities. As a cross-sector innovation collaboration platform, when facing the problem of population ageing, Golden Age Foundation must not only lead innovative thinking to actively respond to challenges, but also make good use of opportunities to push and promote a new golden age economy and turn crises into opportunities. At the summit, the Golden Age Foundation invited industry pioneers, experts and government officials to discuss seven hot topics related to smart ageing, including the golden age economy (business and finance), sustainable development of nursing talents, smart age technology, elderly meals, and elderly services, housing and care in the Greater Bay Area. So, we can exchange and respond to the needs of the ageing society, share visions and insights on promoting smart ageing changes, and the latest technological developments are also important for promoting and reforming smart ageing. The age concept brings huge opportunities.

First, the three topics of housing for the elderly, sustainable talent development and golden meals for the elderly are displayed and disclosed

Mrs. Rebecca Yung Choy, founder and chairman of the Golden Age Foundation, took the lead today (August 3) to introduce 'Developing a Sustainable Strategy for the Golden Age Economy', 'Housing for the Elderly', 'Sustainable Talent Development' and 'Rethinking Golden Age Gourmet' from a number of organizations, hoped that this will attract more people from society to participate in discussions at the summit from different fields.

Regarding housing for the elderly, this event will showcase projects that promote smart ageing in the housing field, covering public and private institutions and projects built with close cooperation from all walks of life. Among them, Hong Kong's first high-end senior housing with "medical and social integration" on the market- "Ventria Residence" will be available in the middle of next year. The concept is derived from the Continuing Care Retirement Community (CCRC), which is popular in foreign countries. With a mature concept, the service model is based on the physical condition and needs of the residents, supporting one-stop comprehensive services of medical care, leisure activities, fitness centers and real-time support, practicing ageing in place and creating a new retirement model that integrates medical, food, housing and transportation.

Mr. Joe Sham Ka-hung, CEO of  Ventria Residence Management Ltd., said: "The development and application of smart age technology and the promotion of timely updates of data and information on residents' physical conditions and needs through cross-professional teams have facilitated the rapid adjustment of service plans as needed. In addition, it can also monitor whether service delivery complies with the standards set in the service plan to enhance service quality."

Gerontechnology attracts young people to join the elderly care industry

First pilot program students: changing stereotypes

In terms of sustainable talent development, in response to the shortage of nursing staff in Hong Kong, the Golden Age Foundation has integrated smart age technology into the training plan for institutional operations and launched a pilot internship program in cooperation with institutions. Mr. Hui Chak-on, Senior Lecturer of the Department of Health Sciences and Director of the Higher Diploma in Health Care of Caritas Institute of Higher Education said: “Through technology to improve nursing efficiency and reduce manpower pressure, we can encourage young people to join the elderly care industry and build an efficient and promising residential care industry, achieving a win-win situation for schools, residential care homes and young people."

During the course, senior nurses taught hospital staff and intern students to use the doll- Dr. Golden to provide companionship services to the residents, and as a smart-age robot to provide social activities for the residents. Chan Wai Sze, a Higher Diploma in Health Care student who participated in the program, also mentioned at the conference that the above two treatments have changed her stereotype of nursing work, and she was very surprised by the results: "During the game, the program data can be used to analyze different residents. memory, executive ability, etc., which combined with various game themes such as markets and restaurants, allowing us to monitor the cognitive performance of the elderly and prevent or detect the symptoms of dementia in residents as early as possible. Many elderly people are very cooperative and proactive.". The demand for residential care homes in Hong Kong is high. This expo also invites different nursing homes and home care service organizations to participate in the exhibition to showcase various personalized care services to the public, thereby improving the quality of life of the elderly and reducing the pressure on caregivers.

Improving the soft dining experience with 3D printing

Golden delicacies for the elderly will become business opportunities

Soft meals in the market mainly use different cooking methods to preserve the original appearance of the food, or use auxiliary food shaping or tools to shape the food. However, it is still a big challenge to reshape the appearance, taste and texture of the food, so that the golden age dining experience is still a big challenge. In view of this, the Golden Age Foundation introduced technology to enhance the soft-serve experience and proposed the "Five Tasting Method" to promote a dining experience that satisfies the five senses, including color (vision), aroma (smell), taste (taste), menu story (Hearing), and interact with food (tactile), so as to respond to market demand with a new dining experience.

Ms. Marietta Lo, Development Director of Golden Age Foundation explained the attractive and age-friendly tableware and plate arrangements at the conference, such as non-slip mats and soup bowls with ears. Also, she demonstrated age-friendly tableware and eating environment designs, such as floors that avoid reflections, space design that reduces the use of mirrors, etc.
