Abstract

In recent years, there has been an increasing concern on dementia especially on the behavioral and psychological symptoms of dementia (BPSD) and the carers stress of the person with dementia (PwD). Some people believe that it is a desperate situation when diagnosed with dementia, and that the PwD is destined to die. Yan Oi Tong (YOT) has introduced an innovative non-pharmaceutical intervention model called "Play Intervention for Dementia" (PID) which educates society to focus on a “PERSON” with dementia rather than a person with “DEMENTIA”, and to treat PwD as a “Person” rather than a “Patient”. With effective communication skills and understanding of the needs of PwD, seniors can live well in the community.
